Butler County, Ohio is very much an entrepreneurial community.  In the 1990s, Pacific Manufacturing in Fairfield started their business with 12 employees.  Today this Toyota supplier employs 250 workers and recently announced a $27 million expansion that will create an additional 200 new jobs.

There is a wide diversity of industry in Butler County.  What in years past used to be an area that was an industrial center for steel and paper manufacturing is now a hotbed for consumer and pharmaceutical R&D, manufacturing technology, supply chain management, and healthcare and medical technology.

The county is growing new economy industries while its manufacturing and employment base, unlike other parts of the country, grew during the 2001-2003  recession.

Ohio's southwest region is a hotbed for the pharmaceutical sector of the bioscience industry. Regional anchor Cincinnati is home to the headquarters of consumer and pharmaceutical product developer and manufacturer Procter & Gamble Co. as well as the Genome Research Institute, a world-class research center dedicated to the discovery and early development of novel and commercially viable therapeutic applications

Ohio's business climate, including its recent tax reform, was a favorable influence on Amylin's decision to move to Ohio," says Ginger L. Graham, president and CEO of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, which is established a $70 million pharmaceutical production facility in West Chester for a product candidate in development for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

CINCINNATI - DAYTON METRO-PLEX  -
LARGEST EMPLOYERS

The Cincinnati – Dayton region has a diverse economy, an educated workforce, and is a one-day drive from 54% of the nation’s population and 53% of the country’s manufacturing plants.  With more than 2,000 area firms engaged in high technology and a proliferation of research and development centers, it is not surprising that the region attracts top technology professionals.

According to Corporate Technology Information Services, Inc., growth in high-tech sectors makes Cincinnati the nation's fourth-best city for employment in emerging firms in the fields of biotechnology, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials.  Entrepreneur magazine ranked Cincinnati 16th in the U.S. for entrepreneurship and first for "best bets for lowest failure rates."  And in 2003, Cincinnati ranked within the top 10 of America's Most Literate Cities.

Dayton is ranked 5th among metropolitan areas for degrees granted in science and engineering on the New Economy Index.  Dayton is home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and 125 related organizations including Headquarters for the Air Force Materiel Command which brings research, development, procurement, and maintenance under one command.  One of the highest concentrations of aerospace-high tech firms in the nation is in the Dayton region because of its proximity to Wright-Patterson.

Dayton also has a long history of automotive manufacturing and its location at the intersection of Interstates I-70 and I-75 make this region a very attractive location for the automotive industry.  General Motors; Delphi Automotive Systems; German auto air conditioning systems manufacturer Behr; and DMAX, a General Motors-Isuzu joint venture, all have operations in Dayton.  In addition, Honda of America has two automotive assembly plants and an engine plant all less than one hour's drive of Dayton.  Listed below are the Cincinnati – Dayton region’s largest employers.
