Wal-Mart Poised to Expand RFID Mandate
Requirements in 2007

While slightly behind schedule, Wal-Mart appears ready to move its RFID program forward. Wal-Mart is expected to have 1,000 of its stores RFID operational by the end of 1Q07. End users are expecting Wal-Mart to begin to add pressure at this time for suppliers to tag greater numbers of stock keeping units. Wal-Mart is expected to have as many as 2,000 stores RFID enabled by year-end 2007.

The use of RFID technology was mandated by the Department of Defense (DoD) to better utilize critical manpower resources for war-fighting functions and to streamline its business processes.  DoD’s policy requires that suppliers put RFID tags on the lowest possible part/case/pallet packaging piece by January 2005 and plans to require RFID tags on key high-value items.  Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) has the worldwide responsibility to implement RFID technology for the Air Force.  Mr. Alan Estevez, Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense – Supply Chain Integration for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, is a member of EPCglobal Board of Governors.

DHL's 2,200 acre, primary U.S. air and ground hub is located in Wilmington, Ohio, about 40 miles from Butler County.  DHL, the world's leading express delivery and logistics company, announced it will be unveiling its radio frequency identification (RFID) pilot project being developed in partnership with IBM.  DHL and IBM will demonstrate how the use of RFID-tagged packages can improve tracking and security for customers.  The initiative, which is a strategic collaboration involving IBM, Intel, Philips, and SAP, intends to develop innovative logistics solutions to increase the efficiency of supply chain management.

DHL and IBM are working together on integrating RFID technology to improve the supply chain by using RFID-tagged repair boxes, RFID readers staged at key points in the transport chain, such as transfer of packages on containers and pallets, loading and unloading of aircraft, and to and from a customer.  It is expected that the pilot project will dramatically improve shipment visibility, and reduce the inbound and outbound scanning process by 90 percent, saving valuable time for transporting shipments.  IBM is working as the project management and integration partner on this initiative.

DHL sees RFID as one of the key technical advancements in the future of supply chain management, with the potential to alter global supply chains in an economically positive way.  The use of RFID creates value for DHL customers by offering them innovative product solutions and real-time visibility in the location of goods and cargo.  Mr. Claus Garbisch, Sector Head Consumer/Retail for DHL, is a member of  EPCglobal’s Board of Governors, the governing body for RFID.
